Chateau Barbeoux

From the isolation of the lighthouse, a seldom traveled road enters the highway. This highway winds its way for several miles up into the mountains that cradle the city of Hidden Cove. It is in these mountains that Kasymm's hide-a-way retreat sits, nestled among pines and tall willows.

The chateau is stone, dug from the very mountain upon which it rests. and cedar, imported and milled by unknowing members of Kasymm's mortal ancestry. The building is large, measuring 120 feet in length by 90 feet wide----two stories with three front facing dormers running along the forest green tile roof. Its shape is rectangular, a small room jutting out on each of the front sides, joined by an open porch with rockers and flowering hanging baskets and windowboxes. To the casual hiker or passer-by, it looks like an exquisite summer home, full of love and light.

A stone wall, three feet high runs in a wide circle around the house and courtyard on three sides, leaving the front open to the view of the city below and the lighthouse which guards it. Large willows droop lazily over wrought iron benches and small fountains placed strategicly throughout the landscaping.

If one were to arrive and enter via the porch, they would find themselves in a huge foyer surrounded by cool green walls and parquet flooring of cedar, oak, and pine. A sweeping mahogany staircase, carpeted in eggshell burber rises directly from the center of the foyer and branches in two directions, each sweeping into a curve to make up the second floor rooms.which run to the front of the chateau. Were you standing in the center of the foyer at the base of the stairs you would look up to huge beams which support the roof. The second floor would surround you so that a person walking up the stairs could circle the entire home, looking over the railing to the person standing at the bottom of the stairway and continue back down the stairway to return to the foyer.

To the right of the first floor entrance is the library, its walls completely covered with leather bound books. In this library Kasymm's cherry desk sits near the large northern exposure window, a five foot floor globe off to the side. Several brocade chairs rest upon persian rugs laid to protect the hardwood floors. Here and there are scatterings of manuscripts and parchments, resting upon antique diazes complete with quill.

Double doors swing wide upon the southern wall, allowing access to the great room which runs the complete length of the back of the house, actually traveling underneath the staircase and second floor rooms. Two stone fireplaces of the very same stone masoned for the outside of the home, adorn the back wall. At the eastern side of the room is a small baby grand which rests upon a white circular fur rug. French doors beside the fireplace lead out into the forest beyond the back of the house. At the western side of the room are several couches and chairs, clustered in a pit group before the second fireplace. Between the twin fireplaces rests a long conference table, seating about twenty. Throughout the room hang artifacts of French and Spanish derivation, some from 15th through 18th century eras. French doors also

lead out to the forest from beside this fireplace. The northern walls have doorways at each end which when crossed come out upon each side of the staircase entry.

Beneath the staircase is the main bath, massive in size.

The final first floor room, (to the left as one enters the home, ) is a clulinary artist/s dream. The western wall consists of running pantries, four in number. These are met by walnut high caninets the length of the room. Beneath are butcherblock counters resting upon copper fronted appliances. The wrap triple sink runs beneath a window looking out into the forest. and butts against a copper fronted double refridgerator, large enough to hold a moose. In the center of the room is a stainless topped island, above which hangs copper and stainless pots and pans. An open hearth is built into the eastern wall for the baking of fresh breads and hard pastries as well as a range top and built in oven. This is Kevin's kingdom and a room in which Kasymm has never set foot.

The second floor consists of Kasymm's bedroom and a guest room, divided by two bathrooms on the western side. The southern expanse and eastern rooms are strictly the quarters for Kevin and his family. and adorned as each family member wishes. The walkway that circles the second floor consists of a gold and brown vague print paper from ceiling to wainscoating which is rich laquered barn planking.

Entry to the attic is accomplished only through a trapdoor with drop stairs that is in Kasymm's room. It is from this vantage point that Kasymm sits and looks out of the dormers at the city and bay and reads the incoming reports on her computerized sustems..

As rustic and calm as the chateau may look, it is secured completely. The cellar appears not to exist, however it is reachable through a hidden staircase from both Kasymm's bedroom and library. Of course, it has tunnels leading to some very important destinations all equally secure.

About twenty yards from the chateau is a small, two bedroom guest house with a small patio. Fifty yards to the east of the house is a small stable and barn.
